Tekla Structures

On this page you find an overview of the frequently asked questions about our software.

What does Structural BIM or SBIM mean?

Structural Building Information Modelling; all constructive information from sales, design and detailing to fabrication and erection integrated in one model. The model can be exchanged with other BIM users.

Can be collaborated with BIM models of other project participants?

Tekla Structures model information can be shared with BIM users in other disciplines and who are working with other software packages. For example, architectural models, structural models can be exchanged.

In BIM, is exchanging all information necessary?

Some data in a Tekla Structures model is for checking and fabrication only. This data, such as bolts, welds, reinforcement, status and planning is not needed for exchange with architects and contractors. For these project participants, volumes, assemblies, profile names and materials is much more important. Collaboration with architects can be done in this same way. In the Tekla Structures model, the architects structure will be represented (including doors en window frames), but e.g. base board color and -type and doorhandles is less relevant for the Tekla Structures users and can omitted in the model exchange.

Is there a BIM certicification?

For the exchange of different types of BIM models, Project participants can use IFC format. Several software packages are certified for supporting IFC. In 2008, Tekla Structures has been certified by Building Smart.

What is 4D / 5D CAD?

4D is 3D CAD with an extra dimension, time. The time factor (and planning) can be added to the model. The 5th dimension is often used for cost estimation.

What do you mean with one database?

All the model information is stored in one location. This model data is used when generation output, like drawings, reports and CNC data). That means, if the model changes, the output will be automatically modified also. In this way, the data is always consistent.

Can I add profiles in the database?

Yes, you can add sketched and parametric profiles to the database. Also, it is possible to add your own parametric connections, stairs, handrails and parts. These parametric designs can be stored to be available in one model only, for one customer only, or stored in a way that the designs are available in all models.

Can I modify workshop drawings to my own standard?

There are many options for modifying drawings, e.g. dimensioning, views, cuts, linetypes and -colors and logos. These settings can be applied for one model only, but can also be made available for all models.

Can Tekla files be exported to be imported in other software packages?

Yes, Tekla Structures is very compatible with other software applications, such as AutoCAD (DWG/ DXF), Microstation, PDMS, Frameworks Plus, PDS, ArchiCAD. Compatibility to other disciplines is possible through IFC, XML, SDNF and DSTV. There are links to several analysis packages like PowerFrame, SCIA and Rstab.

What is the difference between Xsteel and Tekla Structures?

Tekla Structures is the evolution of Xsteel. Tekla Structures has all the capabilities of Xsteel, but has more to offer than Xsteel. In Tekla Structures, you can create steel-, concrete- and timber structures in one and the same model. Tekla Structures manages the building process from sales, design and detailing to fabrication and erection.
